IKKO is one of the new players in the audio world, the OH1 is their first IEM. It features a
Knowles 33518 and 10mm polymer composite titanium-plated diaphragm dynamic driver in a dual configuration enclosed in a full metal shell.
This unit was provided by IKKO in return for an unbiased review.
In the box
- OFC silver-plated 2 pin cable
- 3 pairs of “vocal” eartips
- 3 pairs of “balanced” eartips
The OH1 is built extremely well, all metal body feels sold and premium, not too heavy and not too light either. All edges are smooth and the connector feels sturdy. The cable reminds me of the the one given with the Campfire Audio Andromeda since it’s the same braid and very similar (if not the same) gauge. The pouch is nice and soft but I doubt it would protect the IEMs from crushing which is something to consider.
Fit and comfort
The fit is surprisingly good, my first thought after taking OH1 out of the box was “those can’t be comfortable” which ended up being completely the opposite. Thy sit nice and flush in the ear, the ear hooks on the cable provide nice relief for their weight so they can be worn for a longer period of time without issues. Only problem with fit I can see is if someone has really small ears.
Warm, wide, fun, non fatiguing and inoffensive. Leaning towards an U shaped signature. They have a tuning that would suit most people who are looking for a fun IEM.
Those characteristics differ slightly depending from the tips used. I tried both of the included tips as well as final audio e tips which is what I would recommend.
Here’s a comparison chat (don’t consider this as an accurate frequency response, this is just the response comparison using different tips).
The bass is elevated, has a full and strong body to it. It isn’t the fastest around and can loose a bit of detail in very fast mixes but it’s only a problem if you pay attention to it. The overall timbre in this region is really good, nothing really sounds out of place rather it just works well, there’s no noticeable bleed into the midrange either. The extension goes very deep down pulling off “Bonefield – Window” intro sequence without issues.
The final audio tips added a level of clarity to the bass, lifting off a slight muddiness present with both of the stock tips.
Recessed but still present. Vocals and instruments have really good timbre to them. “Imogen Heap – Headlock” has good separation between instruments, vocals sound natural and even with elevated bass they don’t get lost. “Rodrigo y Gabriela – Somnium” guitars are nicely layered and have a very good texture to them. Slight problems come when the mix gets busier especially in the bass region, “Daft Punk – Get Lucky” shows a bit of muddiness and microdetail loss and a touch of harshness in the upper midrange. “Fleetwood Mac – Dreams” loose a bit of the intimacy that’s present on more neutral/mid-centric headphones.
The treble is slightly recessed but preserves a good amount of detail. Timbre is yet again good, cymbals sound natural but lack a bit of the sparkle. The presentation is non fatiguing and presents a good amount of detail in a majority of music. In worse cases the treble can sound a bit thick when the mix is very busy in the 8+kHz area.
Imaging and Soundstage
Very wide stage for an IEM with average depth, the imaging is good apart from the areas very close to the centre where it gets a tad looser. “Amber Rubarth – Strive” shows the capabilities of the OH1 very well, everything gets placed where its supposed to be while maintaining a wide stage
The IKKO OH1 is something I would easily recommend, especially for people who like their bass. They are a very well tuned, comfortable and affordable set that’s definitely worth a try. Obviously they come with their caveats like the soft carrying case, or slight muddiness on busy mixes but at £149 they are still great value for money. Good job IKKO and keep doing what you’re doing.
